Olympic College Mosaic

Description

The Olympic College Mosaic collection documents the history of the giant mosaic mural that graced the south side of the Math and Science building on the Bremerton campus for nearly 50 years. When the building was demolished in 2007, a community effort saved the mosaic. The mosaic remained in storage until its relocation in September 2017 as a freestanding artwork adjacent to the north end of the Technical Building, also on the Bremerton campus. A reception celebrating the relocation was held on December 5, 2017.

The mosaic, titled The Progress of Man, was conceived by OC’s first art professor Harrison (Hank) Blass. The original installation in the mid-1950s took several years and involved OC students, faculty, staff, and many community volunteers.

During Spring Quarter 2007, the Anthropology 205 (Introduction to Archaeology) class taught by Dr. Caroline Hartse researched and documented the mosaic.

In December 2017, J. Claire Dean of Dean and Associates Conservation Services, Portland, Oregon, completed a written conservation and restoration needs assessment of the mosaic. Her report recommended a 4-phase approach to restore, preserve, and maintain the mosaic. Olympic College has not yet implemented any of her recommendations.
