Description
The video begins with the Olympic College Wilderness Classroom logo. Further in the video there is an Olympic College Basic Campcraft, and Olympic College Special Campcraft logo. We believe these video clips were taken by students in or instructors of Olympic College’s Mountaineering/climbing and Campcraft classes that were started by George Martin, Olympic College's first Registrar. Scenes are of rock climbing, glaciers, climbing on the glaciers, backpacking in summer, wildflowers, birds, people feeding deer, elk on the mountain sides, families camping, and ends with a view of a campfire. We believe these videos were taken in the 1950s or possibly even 1960s. George Martin, Olympic College's first Registrar (from 1949-1966), started Olympic College’s mountaineering classes in 1950. After the basic mountaineering course became a success, advanced mountaineering, rescue and survival, and Campcraft came afterwards. Statements in various articles claim that these Olympic College mountaineering classes were the first credit classes of their kind in the country.
