<br />
Chiyo (also known as Chiya Shigemura Umezuka) was the daughter of the Shigemuras who in 1904 bought and then ran the Washington Hotel at Yama.  <br />
<br />
The interview is almost exclusively about Yama &amp; Nagaya and Port Blakely.  Chiya discusses Yama &amp; Nagaya in detail, including her family’s history, their owning and running the Washington hotel and restaurant, several families who lived at Yama &amp; Nagaya, as well as several families and businesses not only at Yama &amp; Nagaya, but also on Bainbridge Island.  She discusses many aspects of daily life on Bainbridge, including schools/education, farming, health care, religious and community organizations, and more.<br />

Emery Andrews was minister at the Seattle Japanese Baptist Church in Seattle from 1929 to 1955.  During World War II, he and his family moved to Idaho to be near the Japanese Americans from the congregation who were incarcerated.  https://encyclopedia.densho.org/Emery_Andrews/ <br />

The interview concerns World War II Japanese American incarceration and the experiences of Emery Andrews who moved to Idaho to serve his congregation who were incarcerated.  The interview includes discussion of post war resettlement of Japanese Americans.  <br />
<br />
Recording Quality: The first 14 minutes include different speakers, as well as kids playing and other people speaking in the background.  This segment of the interview is difficult to hear.  For the last 19 minutes, Reverend Andrews and the interviewers move to his office.  It is quiet and the quality of recording is good.  The interview may have been conducted in the Seattle Japanese Baptist Church following a church service.<br />

Tom grew up on Bainbridge and after World War II, the family started a large floral business in California.<br />
<br />
The interview discusses Tom’s childhood on Bainbridge, his leaving Bainbridge in September 1941 to go to university at Washington State University.  He also discusses Japanese American businesses on Bainbridge, the Puget Sound region, and in California, where he and his brothers started and ran a large greenhouse/floral business, which is still thriving.  The interview includes a discussion of the Japanese farms and greenhouses on Bainbridge, including his own family’s farm. and pre-World War II Japanese American farms on Bainbridge.<br />

John was a butcher in Winslow. <br />
<br />
The interview includes the history of John’s family (parents) in Japan.  On Bainbridge, the family lived at Yama &amp; Nagaya but then moved to Winslow where John’s father opened a barber shop.  Parts of the interview are about life at Yama &amp; Nagaya, and other segments are about Winslow.  John discusses many individuals, businesses, and organizations in the Japanese American community on Bainbridge Island.  The interview also includes John and Pauline, his wife, talking about the meat market they ran in Winslow for many years prior to World War II.  <br />
